“An Ellis Island Christmas” by author Dr. Maxinne Rhea Leighton
Recently a class of third grade students from PS 134 in New York City visited Ellis Island. They came to attend a reading of “An Ellis Island Christmas” by author Dr. Maxinne Rhea Leighton.
The group was hosted in the Ferry Building which Save Ellis Island restored in 2007.
Our President, Janis DeLuce Calella welcomed and greeted Dr. Leighton, students, educators, and chaperones. “The reading was quite delightful, and the children sat attentively and enjoyed the story.”
After the reading Dr. Leighton signed and personalized copies of the book for each student to take with them. She also signed copies for each of the educators and chaperones that attended.
Following the reading, the students participated in a craft session where they made holiday ornaments and enjoyed lunch.
Our sincere thanks go to Dr. Maxinne Rhea Leighton, Ms. Gloria Lee, Educator and chaperones, the National Park Service, Statue Cruises, Evelyn Hill, Inc., and, of course, the wonderfully behaved students of Ms. Lee’s class at P.S. 134.
