NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES

Landmarks in American History and Culture Teacher Workshop Programs

The Ellis Island Institute had the honor of hosting its fourth National Endowment for the Humanities Landmarks in American History and Culture Teacher Workshop in July 2009. This prestigious program is part of the Endowment’s We the People Initiative. Each July, since 2006, eighty teachers from around the country and as far away as Korea and China have come to Ellis Island for a week of study with nationally known scholars of immigration and public health, immersion in place-based learning on Ellis Island, and a tour of New York’s Lower East Side, home to generations of immigrants. The teachers then work collaboratively, using primary source documents, photographs and objects, to enhance their current lesson plans by incorporating what they learn throughout the week.
