Location
Ellis Island lies in the Hudson River, 1,300 feet off the shore of Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey. The island is one mile from the tip of Manhattan, New York.
How to Get There
The Statue Cruises runs to Ellis Island from the historic Central Railroad of New Jersey (CRRNJ) Terminal building in Liberty State Park, New Jersey and from Battery Park in lower Manhattan. You may call 877-LADY-TIX for daily schedules or visit their website www.statuecruises.com
Ownership and Governance
The park, comprised of Liberty and Ellis Islands, is administered by the National Park Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of Interior.
The National Park Service was given legal title to Ellis Island in 1965. President Lyndon Johnson declared Ellis Island part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. A 1998 United States Supreme Court ruling awarded the State of New Jersey with sovereignty over 22.5 acres and the State of New York with sovereignty over 5 acres of the island.
