With the work to rescue the buildings and begin their rehabilitation underway, SEI also seized the opportunity to bring new programs to the park. In 2005, SEI offered its first teacher professional development workshop under the umbrella of the Ellis Island Institute, using the power of place on Ellis Island as the setting for exploring issues of immigration past and present with teachers. SEI succeeded in these incremental steps while awaiting the complex NPS process for approving projects of this scope. In fact, the NPS has not undertaken a project this large in the history of the agency, making the current government commitment to make the project a priority and see the project completed within the next decade another major accomplishment for SEI and for the National Park Service.
The true challenge is now before us. Our task is to galvanize the support of the American people around the complete restoration of our national monument to immigration, and to insure its long-term use as a self-sustaining, culturally engaging organization which contributes to civil society and provides maximum public benefit.
