Between 1892 and 1954, Ellis Island served as the gateway to America for twelve million new immigrants. Today, over forty percent of all Americans can trace at least one ancestor to Ellis Island, and it is one of the country’s most popular destinations, with nearly two million visitors each year.
In 1954 a portion of Ellis Island, 30 buildings, was closed and left with an uncertain future. Today, through the efforts of Save Ellis Island working in partnership with the National Park Service and the support of the American public, the dream of restoring and opening all 30 buildings has become a reality.
