Featured Program
Follow in their Footsteps: A Journey of Discovery
Take the path traveled by tens of millions of immigrants who arrived in the United States during the 19th and early 20th centuries by visiting Ellis Island, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum and the Museum at Eldridge Street. Together, these museums tell the story of arrival, settlement and community. The Ellis Island Institute is proud to join with National Park Service, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum and the Museum at Eldridge Street for this exciting joint program.
Walk in the steps taken by 12 million immigrants when they disembarked on Ellis Island, the first step of their arrival. Learn the stories of four families who lived at 97 Orchard Street, now the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Discover how immigrants built community and continued their culture at the Museum at Eldridge Street. Look into the past, touch the present, and learn what the future holds for immigrants today by visiting three uniquely linked institutions, where history comes alive with every step.

Immigration Sites of Conscience Network
The Ellis Island Institute, along with the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, has joined as a charter member of the Immigration Sites of Conscience Network, a group of museums and cultural institutions from across the country and Europe dedicated to the stories of immigrants. The goal of the Network is to use the power of these sites to foster and encourage dialogue with the public on the issues of immigration worldwide.
Staff from the Ellis Island Institute attended the kick-off five-day workshop in early August 2008. At the workshop, each member site developed the concept for a public program that would best meet the audiences and mission of their institution. The workshop concluded on August 13 with a reception, lunch and tours on Ellis Island, hosted by the Network, The Ellis Island Institute and the National Park Service.
These programs will be offered in the near future at each Network site, launching an international dialogue on one of the world’s most pressing concerns.
The Ellis Island Institute is proud to be a member of the Coalition and looks forward to engaging Ellis Island visitors in the conversation. Please check the calendar for the dates and times of these new programs.
