About

The Ellis Island Institute is a place for life-learning, a place of discovery and reflection located at a world-class historic site, Ellis Island in New York Harbor. The Institute is dedicated to the issues of migration and public health, the themes of Ellis Island, and ones that continue to have particular relevance today.

Currently, the Institute welcomes visitors to the newly restored Ferry Building with tours and programs for teachers, school students, families and Ellis Island’s two million yearly visitors. Once fully implemented, the Institute and its associated conference facility will occupy the twenty-nine remaining un-restored buildings on Ellis Island’s south side, which served as the U. S. Public Health Service hospitals built to diagnose and treat ill and infirm immigrants.

In the coming months and years, the Institute will expand its programs to include workshops, seminars and conferences on the topics of migration, diversity and world health and host a vibrant schedule of music, film, theater and festivals related to our rich ethnic heritage, all while completing one of the largest preservation projects to be undertaken in this country. Visit us often, and join us in completing the Ellis Island story.
