HELP SAVE ELLIS ISLAND WIN A PARTNERS IN PRESERVATION GRANT - $250,000
We are very pleased to announce that Save Ellis Island has been chosen by Partners in Preservation as one of 40 finalists in the New York area to receive up to $250,000 in grant funding to aid in preserving the hospital buildings on Ellis Island's South Side. Partners in Preservation, a community-based initiative to raise awareness of the importance of historic sites around the country, is a joint effort by American Express and The National Trust for Historic Preservation.
We are currently in 24th place! We need YOUR help! Winners of this campaign will be chosen by popular vote, with the top three winners with the most votes winning the full grant amounts of $250,000 each. Starting today through May 21, 2012, anyone 13 years of age or older (anywhere in the world) can vote online for Save Ellis Island and help us increase our chances of winning.
How to vote: Voting can be done by visiting the Partners in Preservation website or their Facebook page. Voting can be done once per day per person.
We do hope that you'll vote daily for Save Ellis Island, and also share this with friends and family who may be able to help us with the voting. We appreciate your continued support and all of your votes!
On this video you will get a glimpse of the unrestored historic
buildings on Ellis Island. The significance of these buildings and the stories
they hold are an important part of the American landscape and the story of
immigration to the United States. Through
the efforts of Save Ellis Island and the National Park Service, the buildings
were stabilized to prevent further deterioration but remain closed and off
limits to the general public since the mid 1950’s. In 2007, Save Ellis Island
completed the restoration of the Ferry Building and it is now open to the
general public by guided tour.
Video notes: Judith R. McAlpin retired as President of Save Ellis Island,
Inc. in September 2011. She was succeeded by Janis Calella. Cynthia Garrett
retired as Superintendent of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis
Island in 2009. David Luchsinger succeeded
Cynthia Garrett as Superintendent of the Statue of Liberty National Monument in
2009.
